Meet Lisa

My midwifery practice is deeply rooted in the understanding that while I hold expertise around midwifery and physiologic birth, that birthing people are the sole experts of their own lives, and should be respected to assess their own risks, benefits and to make autonomous decisions about the kind of care they are willing to accept as they navigate their childbearing year.

I have attended births for over a decade and have served over 300 families in various roles. As a Registered Midwife, I provide full spectrum midwifery care for all pregnancy outcomes (including abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth), that is trauma informed, queer and trans-inclusive, anti-oppressive and supports the decolonization of institutionalized healthcare systems.

During my senior year of my Bachelor’s of Midwifery, I authored an extensive literature review exploring the many reasons that parents to choose unassisted birth outside of conventional maternity care systems. This review, stories from unassisted birth parents in my community and my own previous birth experiences as both a parent and doula have deeply informed how I have chosen to practice as a Registered Midwife.

Midwifery for me, involves the mutual sharing of knowledge with the families who I support, and is a constant practice of demystifying birth physiology, critically appraising policies and research, navigating politics, getting comfortable with the unknown and listening to birthing families stories and needs. Being a midwife also means embracing the unpredictability of the birth process with humility and constant curiosity and sometimes, sitting with families who are experiencing a grief process.

I believe that safe and transformational birth experiences are possible when we acknowledge we have power with families, without enforcing power over.

Outside my birth work, I’m a complex human who loves coffee, my three teacup humans, nature homeschooling, whiskey, cats, plants, gardening, wild fermentation, new tattoos, loud music, knitted sweaters and reading books in front of cozy fireplaces.
